There are certain standard practices for mailing lists worldwide. If you are new to mailing lists or even if you've been around for a while, but haven't been properly introduced, it is very highly recommended that you retrieve a document explaining mailing list etiquette. Reading and following this document will guarantee a fun, pleasant experience for you and your fellow list members. The document is at the URL: http://www.gweep.ca/~edmonds/usenet/ml-etiquette.html The following are etiquette "rules" for posting to the MoveIt list -Send messages in TEXT ONLY format. Primarily, do not HTMLized messages. HTML messages allow your mail to have different fonts, sizes, colors, etc. The majority of e-mail readers are using readers that are text only. Use of non-text formats results in double messages and/or "garbage" text in your message. Many cannot read non-text messages and as a result, your non-text message will reach a limited audience on MoveIt. Worst of all, many people (especially in Europe) must pay for their email on a per-byte basis. When you send a message in HTML format, you are unnecessarily costing some people two to three times as much money! If you do not know how to turn off these features in your email, please visit http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for a tutorial or write me at dadgummit77@juno.com and I will help you as best I can. -Edit your messages for pertinent quoting. Again, many people are paying for their email on a per-byte basis. When quoting a message for a reply, edit out the non-pertinent part of the quoted message and only quote what is necessary for your reply. Everyone's already seen the original message in the mailing list because it's gone directly to their mailbox. For example, if someone sends a message that looks like this: Blah blah blah irrelevent blah blah blah blah irrelevent blah blah blah blah blah irrelevent blah blah blah blah blah irrelevent rhubarb rhubarb custard custard waffle waffle waffle natter natter relevent natter natter chat chat chat waffle cheers Mrs Matey Cliff Lover Extraordinaire and you want to reply to just the second paragraph, you reply might look like this: Mrs Matey said > natter natter relevent natter natter > chat chat chat waffle wibble wibble wibble waffle waffle more wibble more waffle Hank the Guitar Player Your email software probably has the facility to quote text like this automatically. If you're not sure how, read the help files! (For a longer discourse on posting to Usenet - which is equally valid for mailing lists such as this - see http://www.mahayana.demon.co.uk/computer/format.htm) Note, this rule also applies to the forward of messages to the list and sending the forwarded messages full headers. Please DON'T! -Turn off all "Read Receipts" or "Out of the Office" notices. If your email software has the facility to request read receipts (eg, Eudora, Pegasus), then make sure it's switched off before posting to the list. If your software has the ability to respond by sending a read receipt, don't let it send them to the list. Any email address that continually requests, or sends, read receipts will be unsubscribed. -Do not send private emails or copyrighted material to the mailing list. It is considered rude and inappropriate to quote a private email to a public forum. This also applies to copyrighted materials, such as information taken off web pages. Do not directly quote web page material to the mailing list. Note, sending stuff from newsgroups is fine because that's public domain. -Reposting of MoveIt e-mail to other lists, newsgroups or any other media without the express written consent of the e-mail's originator is prohibited. MoveIt is a private e-mail list. Lastly... People on the list, though sometimes quiet, are a very polite group. Please treat people with respect and you will receive the same. Have fun!
