Never in Digital

Cliff Richard Song Database
Tracks never issued in digital form

Commentary

With the advent of digital technology, and the compact disc in particular, the age of the analog media (vinyl and tape) has all but died. With the rare exception of the audiophile fan, most fans of popular music left behind their old vinyl records and now use digital media (CD or mp3 files) exclusively. As such, many rare recordings previously issued in analog form have been ignored or neglected and never issued in digital form.

Thanks to the hard work of Nigel Goodall and Peter Lewry, most of Cliff's music that was previously issued in analog form has finally been released in digital form. In particular, the release of the ...And They Said It Wouldn't Last! {My 50 Years In Music} CD album box set attempted to fill in the remaining gaps of these songs. It was a valiant effort and exposed some rarely heard tracks and some previously unknown tracks as well, but there were a few small misses.

This page is a review of those tracks by Cliff that have been issued on vinyl or tape in the past that have never been released on CD or as a digital download.

Not released at all...

First off, there is only one known studio recorded, non-live songs that was previously issued on vinyl, but have never had an official digital release anywhere, neither as an edit or alternate form. This is the song Law Of The Universe as heard on the B-side of the Born To Rock 'N' Roll single.

Law Of The Universe Born To Rock 'n' Roll 7" and 12" single [1986]

Now to be fair, many of the tracks that are identified here as having not been released at all (whether mono or stereo) in digital form are simply variations (mono/stereo aside) of songs that have been released in digital form. This means that some songs have been identified as single or extended versions, different takes, or slight edits (including different fade-outs or intros). This section does not address those songs that have mono/stereo variations as those are identified in a different section further down (labeled "Mono or Stereo Variations").

There are also a handful of songs where Cliff contributed one or two live performance recordings to a various artists project that have never had digital release. These include the performance of Love Never Gives Up at a 1975 Way To Life religious show and a 1979 performance of Yes He Lives at a Greenbelt show. (Note that Cliff may well have performed many more songs at these shows, but only these select songs made it to the album/single release and any other songs remain unreleased in any form.)

So with that in mind, below are the Cliff songs identified that have never been released in digital form. All original releases are UK releases unless otherwise noted.

Song Title Original Release Comments
The Shrine On The Second Floor (Edited Promo Version)
Cliff At Tower promo only cassette [1960] This is a short edit only of The Shrine On The Second Floor that was only available on a promo cassette from Tower Records called Cliff At Tower.
Unchained Melody (Alternate South African LP Take)
Listen To Cliff! South African LP [1961]
Since I Lost You It'll Be Me 7" single [1962] A stereo version of this song was released on the 1997 The Rock 'N' Roll Years 1958-1963 set that includes the song count-in. The original version as released on the It'll Be Me single has never been released in digital form.
Got A Funny Feeling (Edited Alternate Take 30 Version)
Cliff At Tower promo only cassette [1960] This is a short edit only of the Take 30 version of Got A Funny Feeling that was only available on a promo cassette from Tower Records called Cliff At Tower.
Wonderful To Be Young
Wonderful To Be Young (Alternate Stereo Version)
What D'You Know, We've Got A Show [mono]
What D'You Know, We've Got A Show [stereo]
Wonderful To Be Young USA LP [1962] With Wonderful To Be Young, there is a fade-out variation between the mono and stereo versions of this song. This is the original mix/version of the song Wonderful To Be Young that appeared on the USA issued LP of the same name. The song was later remixed with different strings and issued on the A Forever Kind Of Love EP and it is this version (as well as an undubbed version) that has had digital release since. The original mixes for the USA LP have never been issued in digital form. The version of What D'You Know, We've Got A Show, unique to the USA LP, edits out the Vaudeville routine from the middle of the song.
I'll Come Runnin' I'll Come Runnin' 7" single [1967] The mono version of this song uses the same backing track, but is a different vocal take. Although the stereo version has been released in digital form, the original mono version, with it's different vocals, has only ever been released on vinyl.
It's All Over It's All Over 7" single [1967] The stereo version of this song added extra guitar to the beginning of the track. The original and shorter mono version has never had digital release.
Pigeon Flying Machine 7" single [1971] The ...And They Said It Wouldn't Last! {My 50 Years In Music} set included a stereo version of this song, but it is a slight edit of the song, fading about 8 seconds early.
The Old Accordion A Brand New Song single [1972] The ...And They Said It Wouldn't Last! {My 50 Years In Music} set included a version of this song, but it is a slight edit of the song, adding an extra line after the first verse and fading about 8 seconds early.
Jesus Is My Kind Of People Live At SPRE-E Various Artists LP [1974] This song, although released on a Billy Graham Spree concert LP, was actually lifted from the sessions that produced the 1974 Help It Along LP.
You've Lost That Loving Feeling
Power To All Our Friends
Don't Meet The Band
Japan Tour '74 Japanese LP [1975] Although this album was released on CD in 2009, there were a few changes during the mastering. The intros to both You've Lost That Loving Feeling and Power To All Our Friends were both editing, cutting part of the instrumentation. Don't Meet The Band, where Cliff musically introduces the band in song, was left off altogether. That was all done presumable to allow the concert to fit on a single CD. So these unique tracks have still never appeared in digital form. It's a shame these track couldn't have been download only tracks.
Love Never Gives Up (Wembley - April 19, 1975) 10th Way To Life Rally Various Artists LP [1975]
Try A Smile (Edited Single Version) Try A Smile USA 7" single [1977] This edit, which is taken from the USA issued 7" single, cuts the final verse and the repeated ending, thus editing together the the end of the last chorus to the final "aaah" ending.
Spider Man (Edited Promo Version) Every Face Tells A Story promo EP [1977] This edit, which first appeared on the promo EP, abruptly cuts the end of the song. It also ended up on the USA version of the LP.

40 Golden Greats Sampler #2

40 Golden Greats Sampler #4

Never Say Die (Give A Little Bit More) (Extended Version) Never Say Die (Give A Little Bit More) 12" single [1983]
Baby You're Dynamite (Extended Version) Baby You're Dynamite 12" single [1984]
Baby You're Dynamite (7" Version) Baby You're Dynamite 7" and 12" singles [1984] This edit cuts several different parts from the last half of the song.
I Will Follow You (Live Performances) Mission England Volume 2 Various Artists LP [1984]
Heart User (Extended Version) Heart User 12" single [1985]
Born To Rock 'N' Roll
She's So Beautiful
It's In Every One Of Us
Dave Clark's Time - The Album [1986] The album version of She's So Beautiful includes a completely different intro with different lyrics and instrumentation. Also, perhaps not of great interest to many, but the original LP featured audience cheering noises inserted over the beginning and end of Born To Rock 'N' Roll and It's In Every One Of Us. This audience cheering noise is absent from all other releases of these songs.
She's So Beautiful (Special Mix Version) She's So Beautiful 7" single [1985] This is basically an edited, instrumental version of the song, although Cliff's backing vocals are still in the mix.
She's So Beautiful (Extended Mix) She's So Beautiful 12" single [1985]
She's So Beautiful (Special Extended Mix Version) She's So Beautiful German 12" single [1985]

It's In Every One Of Us (Choral Version) It's In Every One Of Us 12" single [1985] This version is an edit with all instrumentation removed and a choir backing.
Born To Rock 'N' Roll (Special Extended Mix) Born To Rock 'n' Roll 7" single [1986]

Mono or Stereo Variations

It is well known that many of Cliff's earlier material was recorded in mono only or released in both mono and stereo formats. As time went by, when both formats were available, the stereo versions of his songs were given the preferential treatment on releases, leaving many of the mono versions on the shelf. There is no notable difference (such as an edit or take) between the mono and stereo mixes. Indeed, often the mono is just a mix down of the stereo version. But this section attempts to address those mono and stereo (and mock stereo) versions of songs that have never seen a digital release.

It is perhaps surprising that there are still some songs that have perfectly good stereo mixes, but these stereo mixes have been ignored over the years. For unknown reasons, the stereo mixes have been passed over and only the mono mixes of these songs have been released on all digital rereleases or compilations. The songs in this category are:

Song Title Original Stereo Release Comments
Dynamite (Alternate Unknown Take) Pioneros Del Rock Spanish LP [1985] This is a curious alternate take of Dynamite that first appeared in mono on the 1962 Holland Time To Rock! LP and has been used in mono on a few compilations since. The stereo version of this alternate take was discovered on a 1985 Spain issued Cliff Richard LP called Pioneros Del Rock. So the true stereo version is known to exist, but it has never been known to appear on any other releases, digital or otherwise.
Bachelor Boy (USA Remix Version) Hits From Summer Holiday EP [1963] This is the alternate version that is now commonly available in mono, but has been ignored in stereo since the mid-1980s.
Wonderful To Be Young (EP Version) Cliff And The Shadows Forever stereo LP [1964]
Some Of These Days Holiday Carnival stereo EP [1963] The ...And They Said It Wouldn't Last! {My 50 Years In Music} set included a stereo version of this song, but it is a slight edit of the song, fading about 5 seconds early.
The Twelfth Of Never More Hits - By Cliff stereo LP [1965]
You Belong To My Heart Cliff Richard stereo LP [1965] There was a split stereo mix on the Cliff Richard original stereo album. Subsequent stereo issues were a narrow stereo mix.

Finally there is the issue of mock stereo tracks. Mock stereo is a method for transforming mono recordings to a stereo-like effect that went out of fashion by the early 1980s. Although several of Cliff songs were mixed to mock stereo, because the format was mostly abandoned by the time CDs and digital media was on the market, very few of Cliff's mock stereo mixes have been released in digital form. These mock stereo tracks that have never had digital release include:
